Introduction

Introduction:

The Department of Economics at National Dong-Hwa University offers a thorough range of programs from Bachelor of Economics (since 1997), along with an innovative range of postgraduate degrees, including Masters of Economics (since 1994) and Ph.D. degree (since 2001). There are currently 15 teaching staff (with Ph.D. degree from renown Universities in Taiwan and other countries) in this department. All of them contribute themselves devotedly into research and lecturing. The variety of their expertise stirs cooperation in research and further contribution in academic performance.

The lecturers offer many courses with study areas including advanced microeconomics and macroeconomics, finance management, mathematical economics, health economics, labor economics, environmental economics and many others. Through the courses held in this department, students gain an in-depth understanding of the issues regarding the performance of real-world economy, financial environment and the effects of government’s economic policies.

The goals :

The goals of the Department of Economics is to educate students about what economics is really about, develop their skills in applying the analytical techniques on economic issues, adopt to this fickle world-wide economic environment, and establish students’ capability in economic analyses (if they want to pursue further studies).

Characteristics:

The undergraduate programs in National Dong-Hwa University are in module format, which provides students a flexible way to pursue knowledge. For example, besides the compulsive courses (basic courses for first-year students, core courses for sophomores and junior students), the department of Economics offers two elective bachelor programs: Industrial Economics, and International Economics. Moreover, under the module format, many basic courses held in Faculty of Management are the same to the ones in Department of Economics; therefore, if a student takes eight elective courses conducted by School of Finance, he is eligible to complete dual degrees within four years. The course design is beneficial to students who want to enter job market right after graduation. The postgraduate programs are scheduled to focus both on economic theories, which are the cores of Industrial Economics Program and International Economics Program, and on economic empirical applications, which are the cores of Applied Econometrics Program.

Future Study and Career:

We equip our graduates with the techniques needed for successful careers in a wide variety of fields containing jobs in banking and financial industries, academic sectors, government sectors, and others.
